Naomi from Trinidad visits Star of Hope

Email Print PDF

This week we had a visit from Star of Hope Trinidad Manager, Naomi Reed.

In Trinidad Star of Hope supports two preschools located in poor slum areas. By law, primary school in Trinidad is available to all and it is both free and compulsory. The reality is, however, the children need to have a basic knowledge to be admitted. To have that, they need to have gone to preschool before they begin primary school. Read More

Naomi informed us that she is in need of extra support; a large stove is needed to replace the old one that is broken. This stove and a 200 pound gas cylinder and installation is priced at $2,800.00 U.S. The cabinets for the kitchen remodel will cost around $2,500.00 U.S. The new kitchen size is around 9 wide and 28 feet long, they will have room to store everything and room to prepare the meals for the children and for a soup kitchen for the area!

Ample School Supplies

Email Print PDF

Here are some pictures of the school supply distribution to 500 children in Boyer school on Wednesday November 7th.

Notebooks, pencils, pens, rulers, geometric templates and more are given to the children so they are able to perform the class work and home work. School supplies of this kind cost about $2 per child. Here in Haiti that is a large amount for many of our families. There never seems to be enough as children use a lot of school supplies as they learn.

We would like to be able to make 3 distributions a year, to a total of 3000 children in 8 school projects. Because of limited budget we are able to make only one distribution. Perhaps you could help us do more?

Email Print PDF

Dona Dony is a student at Star of Hope's Boyer school in Haiti. In April of 2011 he became severely ill, he couldn't eat he stayed in bed and went physically downhill and almost died.

one year later dona dony haiti boyer star of hope

His mother was afraid for his life. She like so many from Haiti was financially broke so she contacted Star of Hope through the school project to see if we could help her boy. She was desperate for medical assistance for Dona Dony. Star of Hope quickly visited the family and assured the family that Dona would get the medical assistance needed. Hospitalized, he had 2 surgeries and was ordered to take a full year of convalescence.

After a year at home, Dona Dony returned to school. He was happy to be back on his feet, meet his old friends and start a new school year.

Today Dona Dony is a good looking, healthy young man. (Yes this is the same boy)

While attending a parents meeting at the beginning of the school year, Dona's mother asked to speak. She was very happy to tell the audience that "education is a source of life for the Hatian youth", she added "my child came to school to be educated and from this action I also was given the gift of his life, because of the Star of Hope support".

Star of Hope was able to act because of the sponsors who have donated extra for any project or event. We have tiny buffer fund where we put these extra donations into our humanitarian efforts. To us here in Haiti it's just like you are here - because we see your hand in our work.

On behalf of Dona Dony and his family, Star of Hope Haiti thanks every sponsor, monthly sponsors and one time givers alike, you have make our work possible in Haiti.

Star of Hope Haiti Provides Latest Updates About Project Affected by Hurricane Sandy

November 6, 2012 Port-au-Prince, Haiti. - Myrtha Dor, Director of Star of Hope Haiti advises the following:

Projects in Boyer, Jeanton, Rigaud are operating normally and all the children are present in school. Little damage or loss is reported in these areas.

Bois Negresse is still cut off due to damage to the roads making them impassable. The project leader did come to the Star of Hope office following more than 24 hours of travel. He walked  many hours to where he could find a 'tap-tap'. But because the bridges are out, he had to switch 'tap-taps' four times each after walking across a deep washed out ravine. The project leader reports that it appears that complete crop of cabbage and potatos has been lost. Harvest would normally begin at the end of November. The project leader brought word that the people have no idea how to even pray for help.

Dano reports that the road is open and the community is holding a meeting Thursday to decide how best to handle the recovery. Star of Hope will participate in the meeting as a community member.

Hesse roads are passable, just barely. The community has met and is working to repair the main road first and then will work on the secondary ones. All the roads are repaired by hand and by the local population. The school building has suffered partial loss of roofing. One first inspection the structure appears to be sound.

Marigot. Myrtha says she cannot even have words to describe the tragedy there. Two hurricanes in two months. The people are living on God's Mercy.

New photographs show the destruction caused by hurricane Sandy in Hess Haiti.

On October 25 hurricane Sandy reached southern Haiti with strong winds, heavy rain and high waves.

Four of Star of Hope's seven projects in the country have been affected and at least two schools were damaged.

This pictures is from the Hesse village. The roof on the school was damaged, many houses were damaged, and most of the villagers crops were destroyed and large numbers of the livestock perished.

One can see in the slides the bananna crops that are toppled and the cropland that is flooded.

Press Release
The Haitian Government Declares a State of Emergency in the Areas Where Star of Hope has Projects
Ellinwood KS, Nov 1, 2012: Haitian agriculture suffered damage on the order of $104 million dollars because of tropical storm Sandy. As an initial response the Haitian government has declared a state of emergency. These areas face a famine according to Ady Jean Gardy, the Minister of Communication. Star of Hope has projects in the hardest hit areas.

Haiti has multiple growing seasons each year. During the spring 2012 season, drought hit the areas causing an estimated $80 million dollar loss to the agricultural segment of the economy. The next crop was destroyed by Hurricane Isaac with an estimated $70 million dollar loss. Now, Sandy has destroyed the majority of the crops that should be ready for harvest in the coming weeks.

Price of basic food items has been increasing throughout the country and is impacting the poorest and most vulnerable. The government has noted that the poorest have entered into a survival mode as noted by the increase in charcoal production, keeping children home from school and abandoning their small farms.
The planting for the spring growing season which produces about 60% of the total annual food production should take place in March. As it stands right now, that planting is in doubt as the small farm families have no resources to buy seed or the simple hand tools needed to work the fields.
Star of Hope has initially identified 2,100 families in their project communities that are especially at risk and in need of help to survive. The initial need is for $234,000 dollars or $110 per family.
Donations are being accepted on their website www.starofhope.us or by phone (866) 653-0321.

Star of Hope Haiti Schools Open with Damage

Ellinwood, Kansas Oct 30, 2012: Star of Hope schools in Haiti report that they are welcoming children back into class even with damage to the buildings.

Myrtha Dor, Director of Star of Hope Haiti reports that Bois Negresse has been affected the most. Half of the metal roof is gone from the newly opened school building. Trees are down some taking the flimsy homes of the people. The farm fields have been washed out and the road is still cut by a failed bridge.

In Boyer, there is some road damage but the school and all the children are reported to be doing well. In Dano the road is still out and the reports of loss of fields and livestock continue to come in to the office in Haiti. The debris and dirt casued by the water that flooded the school has been cleaned by the local people. Rigaud is reporting no problems.

In Hesse the road is still impassable and reports from the school is that one of the buildings lost half of the metal roofing. Jeanton school is okay and the roads in to the community are damaged but passable. The Marigot project has been flooded twice in less than two months. The people are beginning the cleanup process.

All of the Star of Hope projects are functioning today. The children are excited to return to school, even if they will sit outside under a tarp. Repairs are being planned for the damaged buildings. Additional help is needed to assist the 2,100 families who have lost much of their livelihood.

Donations are also being solicited to assist in the response to the disaster. Donations may be made through their website www.starofhope.us or by phone at (866) 653-0321.
