After a week of delays due to the chikungunya epidemic, all 28 sewing students were present for their graduation ceremony held on July 20th. Parents, relatives, the mayor of the town, police officers and delegates from the ministry of education; all were on hand to congratulate the participants on their graduation.

For the month of their exam, the participants produced 162 pieces including the set they wore on their graduation day. As much as 95% of all fabrics were picked from a big stock of fabrics donated from the US and Sweden.

The class started with 35 participants and we ended with 28 participants for the graduation; 24 women and 4 men. They had to work hard just to get to classes as it was not an easy year for the students. The road was blocked 4 times due to weather, that blocked me as well, so reaching the school and teaching was not always so easy. To respect the timeframe and the program, I had to double the lessons some weeks depending on the assignments; some of my students didn’t appreciate that too much. I had to put the pressure on them as I have to respect the program and the schedule. As we were approaching the end of the program, they became more interested and were so eager to enter the business market for themselves, as business people.

The pick of the top laureates this year was most difficult but I gave it extra effort and picked the following who excelled:

Renel Rousseau the 3rd laureate is a very neat student and had given his exam on time. He sewed 6 pieces that he modified from the studied models, very neat and well done.

Celestin Marie Edeline is the 2nd laureate; she picked and created 3 different models that were well done.

Jean Baptiste Yanique is the 1st laureate. She exhibited since the 1st lesson that she was in search of this profession. After the 1st lesson she made a skirt for herself. Her pieces are always well done. Although she gave her exam on time, she asked me for another piece of fabric to create another model that has no flaws at all and this last piece had put her well above the others. Not only that one week before graduation, she volunteered to sew 4 sets (skirts and tops) for 4 little girls to dance during the graduation ceremony. Yanique loves the profession and she is already and excellent seamstress.

Dieulavie Jean; a disabled young girl had grabbed my attention and became very special to me. She is always in a good mood and refuses for any reason even when absent to learn the lesson. If she for some reason is absent, she will learn from her older sister Sylmane who is also participant of the sewing class and also very good student. Dieulavie owes her achievement to herself. I suggested her model that she agreed to produce; boom! Perfectly made! I could have called on many others for a mention but the time frame affected many making them not the favorite to be picked as laureate of this graduation.

My students are happy with their achievement, the program and finally to grab their diplomas. For myself, I have to pack and wait on the next school opening in September to take the road to the Rigaud School where the sewing project will start and this will be the 5th year of the sewing program for Star of Hope Haiti.
