Star of Hope Haiti, March 16, 2020 (Needed good news during this COVID problem)

Mango planting project at Boyer School, a report.
Star of Hope Haiti financed, on Wednesday, March 7, 2020, a mango tree planting project at the Boyer school.

300 seedlings were bought from a nursery in Port-au-Prince and transported the same day to the Boyer school. The seedlings were given only to children who have land near the house capable of producing mangoes. Thus 150 children out of 600 were able to receive 2 seedlings each. The leaders of the school were accompanying the children to their house to help them plant the mango trees well and water them.

The project was greatly appreciated by the children and their families. If children will take good care of the trees to grow fast, they will be able to start fruiting in 3 years. Mangoes is a very popular fruit in Haiti, all Haitians love mangoes. Mangoes play an important role in the economy of Haiti, we consume it a lot and we export it to other countries. Haiti has the best mangos in the world and produces more than 100 varieties of mangoes during the spring season. Mango is a tropical fruit that loves warmth, it is produced everywhere in Haiti except in the high mountain areas where the temperature is lower than 26 degrees centigrade in the daytime.

Even the children know the importance of mangoes, that is why they all wish to have a seedling but since there were not enough for everyone, we selected only 150 according to the criterion to give 2 seedlings to each pupil.

We have a follow-up plan to visit the mango trees every 3 months to measure the degree of growth of the mango trees of each student and to make recommendations to better take care of the trees if necessary.
Each mango seedling cost $1 for the size we choose to give to the children but bigger is the size of seedings higher is the price. The price for one mango seedling varies from one dollar to $50 according to the size. We bought a smaller size that has a higher chance to succeed.

The leaders of the Boyer school and the students benefiting from the mango seedlings join Star of Hope staff to express words of gratitude and thanks. to Salgado for his financial support to buy the mango seedlings. Please find attached the photos that were taken on the day of distribution and planting of the seedlings.

Thank you, Star of Hope family and supporters.
