Help with Food
Today is the sixth anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti that did extensive damage and destroyed large parts of the capital Port-au-Prince. Although Haiti has seen more than its share of disasters it feels like the country is gradually moving to a better place.
Still there are problems with the education system and electricity and so on and the Haitian Gourde currency has lost 20% against the important US dollar, all couse stress for the economy.
The educational systems remain at risk and even as the authorities promise a lot of improvement very little happens. However, in October the "National Pact for Quality Education" was signed by all political parties, the pact is a package of eight points promising to do everything to develop the education system in Haiti. Among other things, the budget for education is guaranteed to be at least eight percent of GDP, which means a doubling of the current budget. Of course it remains to be seen how this package will develop in the long term. The program also requires an investment in the teachers; unfortunately, it already seems to be a problem, since a large proportion of teachers in government schools go on strike on January 15 because of poor conditions and unpaid salaries.
Star of Hope continues to bring the light and the Word. We have rebuilt all our Star of Hope destroyed and damaged schools. All the 3000 schoolchildren Star of Hope supports now have a good safe school with trained teachers. They receive education, school lunches, safe drinking water and at the same time the schools serve as a safe haven for the children. The schools have a library, dining room, playgrounds, clean toilets and more. Also we are excited that several schools now offer computer instruction.
We need to bring more hope; we want to do more for the poor and vulnerable children in Haiti. We want to develop the schools further.
