Being a young girl and growing up in the slums of Taytay on the outskirts of the Philippine capital of Manila is rarely a dance in the roses. Widespread poverty, violence, rape, broken families and lack of education is a day-to-day experience. But in the Philippines, there are 3.8 million children and young people outside the school system. Terrible.
I have been to the Philippines many times. I have seen many children who have grown up in the slum and have gone to the school of Star of Hope. Many of them are out in the workforce today, others study at college. The school is like a haven that makes a big difference for about 2000 students.
What the school means to poor families in the slums is unexplainable or it is near everything.
Unfortunately, I've met too many young people, especially girls who skipped school early, usually because of the reasons mentioned above.
Recently, Star of Hope had a campaign to build the school in Taytay. The collection went well but more help is needed especially long-term support. We need more monthly donors to drive and develop the fine school. Soon, the new school year begins, click here to see how you can help.
Together we make a difference for the vulnerable children!
