The sounds of war are constant in Ukraine. The wail of air raid sirens and the low rumble of distant explosions have become a grim soundtrack for millions. But at the Berezovka Boarding School for Deaf Children, the silence is different. These children cannot hear the sirens, yet they feel every vibration of the conflict deep within their hearts.
In the midst of this ongoing struggle, a new reason to celebrate has emerged. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of Star of Hope donors, a specialized school kitchen has been inaugurated, providing these children with more than just a place to cook—it has given them a sanctuary.

More Than Just a Kitchen
For children who spend the majority of their year living at a boarding facility, the environment can often feel clinical or institutional. The goal of this project was to break that mold. The new kitchen is a cozy, brightly decorated space designed to evoke the warmth of a family home.
“For children who live at the boarding school for a large part of the year, the kitchen gives a sense of something homely and familiar,” explains Vitalay, our local partner in Ukraine.
The project provided the school with essential upgrades, including:
-
Modern Cooking Equipment: Allowing students to learn vital life skills and bond over shared meals.
-
A New Refrigerator: Ensuring fresh food is always available.
-
Medical Refrigeration: A dedicated unit to safely store the children’s necessary medications.
-
Color Printing Technology: A high-quality printer for teachers to create visual, pedagogical materials tailored for deaf education.

Feeling the Silence, Knowing the Fear
One of the most poignant challenges for the students at Berezovka is their unique relationship with the war. While they are spared the terrifying noise of the missiles, they are not spared the terror.
“These children cannot hear the world around them, but they feel everything in their hearts,” Vitalay says. “They don’t hear the air alarms, but they feel the same terror when Russian missiles approach. This gift shows them that there are also good people out there who see them and care about them.”
By providing a space that feels like “home,” Star of Hope is helping to mitigate the psychological trauma of the war. In this kitchen, the focus shifts from the uncertainty of the outside world to the simple, tactile joy of kneading dough or sharing a warm meal with a friend.

Empowering Through Education
The addition of a color printer might seem like a small detail, but in the world of specialized education, it is a game-changer. For deaf children, visual learning is the primary gateway to understanding the world. Teachers at Berezovka are now able to produce vibrant, engaging educational materials that help bridge the communication gap, ensuring that despite the war, their education remains a priority.
The kitchen at Berezovka is a shining example of what happens when compassionate individuals come together to support the most vulnerable. However, the need in Ukraine remains vast. As the conflict continues, thousands of children are still living in the shadow of fear, requiring food, education, and emotional support.
