Teaching Children to Find Peace in What They Have
In our fast-paced world of “bigger and better,” it’s easy to lose sight of the blessings we already hold. This April, our Awana partners at Star of Hope Ghana shared a timely lesson on Contentment, reminding us—from the heart of Kansas to the coast of West Africa—that true peace begins with a grateful heart.

Find Peace in What We Have: A Lesson on Contentment from our Friends in Ghana

In the heart of the USA, we know the value of a hard day’s work and the importance of family. We also know that in a world full of “bigger and better,” it can be easy to lose sight of the blessings right in front of us. This past April, our Awana partners at Star of Hope Ghana spent their time diving deep into a topic that hits home for all of us: Contentment.

As the children returned from their school vacations “hearty and well,” Bible Teaching Coordinator Isaac Nii Adjin Lartey led them through a powerful series of lessons on being satisfied and grateful for God’s provision.

The Garden Lesson: Why We Wander

Using the story of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3, Isaac taught the children that the devil’s oldest trick is making us feel like we are missing out. Even though Adam and Eve lived in paradise and lacked nothing, the enemy offered them “something more”—something they didn’t need.

“Whatever the devil gives… would at best offer a short-term enjoyment but would eventually lead us into destruction and a strained relationship with God.”

Real Talk for Real Life

One of the most moving parts of this month’s report was how Isaac applied these biblical truths to the daily lives of the children in Ghana. He spoke to them about situations many of our own children and grandchildren face here in Kansas:

  • Handling “No”: Understanding that if parents can’t provide something immediately, it isn’t a lack of love.
  • The Comparison Trap: Seeing a friend with a newer dress or nicer shoes doesn’t make what you have “bad.”
  • Family First: Choosing to be understanding and supportive of their parents rather than causing a scene or feeling envious of others.

A Prayer for Gratitude

The lesson concluded with a simple but profound truth: God loves a grateful heart. The children learned that when we are satisfied with the “little” we have, we open our lives to blessings that bring true happiness—not the kind that comes with a hidden curse.

The session ended just the way we like to celebrate here—with plenty of singing, dancing, and a community prayer for the spirit of gratitude.

How You Can Help them Find Peace

As we look at the photos in the slideshow above, let’s remember that while our landscapes look different—from the wheat fields of Kansas to the vibrant communities of Ghana—our mission is the same: Raising children who love the Lord and find their joy in Him.

Please join us in praying for:

  • The children of the Awana program to stay firm in their “spirit of gratitude.”
  • Isaac and the leadership at Star of Hope Ghana as they mentor the next generation.
  • Our local supporters, whose generosity makes these global connections possible.

May God bless you for your continued support please consider helping the kids learn about how to find peace!
