The last specially arranged weeks for the 2019-20 school year in Haiti started on 17 August. All our seven schools have been in session and it has worked well since then.
These final lessons last until September 30, which is the last date for the academic year 2020. October will be the month in which all schools hold exams for students at all levels. The new academic year 2020-21 begins on 3 November.
The Star of Hope has focused on three areas to help children return to school more easily during these six weeks:
For the very important lunch program, we have delivered rice, ground corn, peas, cooking oil, canned fish, and various spices. This means that the children can now eat and measure every school day. This is very important for the children and their families during the protracted economic crisis in Haiti.
We have provided all schools with school materials. Each child has been given notepads, pencils, and other school supplies so that they can participate in the lessons, do their homework, and prepare for the exams.
For the health and hygiene program, we have equipped each school with cleaning materials and a thermometer to take the students' temperature at the school entrance. Each school has also set up separate handwashing stations. All to have control over any spread of infection.
The children who participate during the corrected semester are the children from the last year of preschool and upwards. The youngest preschool children still stay at home.
All children are grateful for the support they received for an easier return to school. A special thank you to all sponsors and special gift-givers for their generosity towards the children.
