Latest News from the Haiti Intervention.

Appeal-

From time to time a great need arises, that requires a response. Such is the case for our Haitian brothers and sisters who have endured yet another crisis – Hurricane Matthew. The devastation was massive; leaving thousands displaced as the storm destroyed their homes, food supplies, clean water, clothing, and even school supplies for children.

According to the CDC, centers for disease control, Haiti is on the verge of a cholera outbreak. If this occurs, thousands of people will be affected, leaving many dead. The time to act is now! Can you help restore Haiti by providing food, clothing, clean water, and even school supplies?

There are several ways to give.

• Give online at www.starofhope.us/give

After our visit to Roche Jaboin; Les Cayes during our 2nd intervention of phase 1 of Star of Hope humanitarian food distribution, we are now heading for Phase 2.
This will target Star of Hope projects and people in Hesse, Dano, Marigot and Bois Negresse and the victims of hurricane Matthew. When more funds become available, we will extend our humanitarian efforts in La Vallée; another affected village close to Marigot where we got our first pictures report of the situation and followed by Jeanton and Boyer less affected by the disaster.

Dennis Thern with an update from Haiti.
Disaster relief; I am glad that Star of Hope was able to collect all that money so we can help the poor and desperate people in the fishing village. Many have not eaten for a week or more. They have nothing. It feels great that so many have given money to a good purpose.
So the other day Star of Hope did a food delivery to the completely destroyed village.
Over 500 packages of rice, pasta, beans and more was delivered in disaster relief in cooperation with local authorities.
Many thanks for your gift. We will distribute more food to those affected in Haiti. Please continue to support us. THANKS!

A happy mother knows she can now feed her children,

OCT 20

Dennis Thern from Haiti reports.
A few days ago we came to the small fishing village of Roche Jaboin on the south coast of Haiti. I got a shock and flashback from another time. The whole village was destroyed. It looked like after the Asian tsunami in 2004. I was in Thailand then and it is scary how similar it was the places I visited then.
Now it looked like a landscape made in a disaster movie, broken down and deserted. Just that it's real.

97% of all homes were leveled, what would you do?

Only a few of the village's 233 houses remained standing. All the village's 75 fishing boats were swept away too. Animals, agriculture, fruit trees were gone forever.
Villagers whom mostly live from hand to mouth have no food now, and can not support themselves in any way. It takes time to build new fishing boats so the fishermen can pull out to sea again and try to earn a living. But what will make the boats from? There are no trees.
At the rescue center, which is a private residence that held the hurricane, hosts 103 people. It is crowded, hot and unworthy for use as this. But what should they do?
I felt really ill to go around among the ruined houses. It was a surreal feeling.
What is the future for these people?

OCT 13

On Thursday Star of Hope delivered disaster relief to the village Debouchette, on the far southern peninsula of Haiti. In this area 90% of agricultural assets and residences were destroyed! SimplyLeveled.
Star of Hope distributed 525 packets which reached more than 3,000 people in need of help. Each packet contained rice, sugar, beans, cooking oil, sardines, and pasta.
Everyone was very happy and grateful the need was and is huge.

It has been two long and hard days for the local team in charge of distribution. Identification of the neediest and then distributing the packages takes much time and energy.
Much more help is needed for a long time to come!
