Help with Food
Many of you are unaware of Star of Hope’s work in Ukraine because our Swedish branch handles most of the mission work there. However, in 1993 I was one of the first Star of Hope employees to visit Ukraine when we started rehabilitation camps for children affected by cancer due to the Chernobyl disaster. We also provide hospital equipment and coordinate the exchange of knowledge for doctors. The earliest children we helped are adults today, and we still have contact with many of them while they are fleeing for their lives. Some of them are fleeing for their lives while carrying their children in their arms. The men must leave wives, mothers, and children to stay and fight a war risking their blood and death. They hope and pray their loved ones can make it to a haven without them.
Now we are committing ourselves to increase our help in Ukraine. This is the plan…
* First, Star of Hope Romania has social workers and staff on the border meeting refugees. They have open arms and hearts and even small gifts for the children. We have converted three of our Roma child support centers and Centers for children with disabilities into shelters for families on the run. One center will concentrate on children with disabilities, which is a unique competence we have in Romania.
* Two trucks loaded with relief supplies have left star of Hope Sweden bound for Ukraine's western border. We are currently preparing one more truck. Star of Hope's Ukrainian partners are waiting for the much-needed materials. The plan is to move the supplies to several smaller vehicles and then attempt to get into Ukraine to reach families on the run. The relief materials need to be replenished. The list is long, and so much is needed.
* Aid shipments will be obtained from Romania. We will buy goods and equipment in neighboring Romania to be transported to Ukraine. As the prices in Romania are lower than in Western Europe, a donation can go a long way.
